To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to extend condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of longtime Atlanta attorney James D. “J.D.” Humphries III on his passing at the age of 81.

A Georgia Bar member since 1970, Mr. Humphries was associated with several Atlanta law firms throughout his 52 years of law practice, beginning with Kilpatrick, Cody, Rogers, McClatchey & Regenstein and later with Varner, Stephens, Humphries & White, with Stites & Harbison PLLC and with Smith, Gambrell & Russell LLP.

A leader among his peers, Mr. Humphries served the legal profession as a past president of the Lawyers Club of Atlanta, the Atlanta Lawyers Foundation and the Atlanta Legal Aid Society. He was honored in 2016 by his alma mater, Washington & Lee University, with its Distinguished Alumnus Award.

J.D. Humphries will be missed and fondly remembered by his fellow members of Georgia’s legal community. We appreciate his dedication and the many contributions he made through his service to the public and the justice system.

Sincerely,

Christopher P. Twyman
President, State Bar of Georgia
