To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to extend congratulations to attorney David J. Burge of Smith Gambrell & Russell LLP in Atlanta on his appointment by Gov. Brian Kemp to serve as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Revenue.

All Georgians will benefit from Mr. Burge’s leadership of the Department of Revenue, which is responsible for enforcing the state’s alcohol and tobacco laws, managing motor vehicle tags and titles, and administering Georgia’s tax laws. He will succeed outgoing Revenue Commissioner Frank M. O’Connell, who was recently confirmed by the state House and Senate Judiciary Committees as Georgia’s first Tax Court chief judge.

A member of the Georgia Bar since 1985, Mr. Burge is a past chair of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs board and a current member of the State Ethics Commission.

By accepting this appointment, David Burge demonstrates his continued commitment to public service. We wish him well in this capacity of state leadership.

Sincerely,

Christopher P. Twyman
President, State Bar of Georgia
