To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to offer congratulations and thanks to State Bar General Counsel Paula J. Frederick on her retirement, which will take effect Jan. 31, following 15 years of service in that position.

A native of Riverside, California, and a member of the Georgia Bar since 1982, Ms. Frederick began her career as a staff attorney for Atlanta Legal Aid before joining the State Bar Office of General Counsel in 1988, working under the late William P. “Bill” Smith III and being named as deputy general counsel in 1992. In 2009, she was selected as Smith’s successor and became the fourth general counsel in the 45-year history of the State Bar of Georgia as well as the first African-American and first female to serve in that position.

While carrying out the office’s duties of interpreting ethics rules for lawyers, prosecuting lawyer discipline cases and providing legal advice to the Bar’s officers and directors, Ms. Frederick has additionally served as president of the Atlanta Bar Association and the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys.

In recognition of her 36 years of service to the Office of General Counsel, the Supreme Court of Georgia has announced it is honoring Ms. Frederick with its Amicus Curiae (Friend of the Court) Award, one of the most prestigious honors bestowed by the state’s highest court on those who have provided exceptional service to Georgia’s lawyers, judges and the administration of justice.

We join the Supreme Court in saluting Paula Frederick on her exemplary career of service to the legal profession and the public. We wish her well in her years ahead.

Sincerely,

Ivy N. Cadle
President, State Bar of Georgia
