To the Editor:
On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to express condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of longtime Atlanta attorney and State Bar Past President W. Stell Huie on his passing at the age of 93.
A member of the Georgia Bar since 1953, Mr. Huie practiced law in Atlanta for 50 years. His many clients included the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church USA, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Georgia Bankers Association and American Business Products Inc. For 18 years, he served the public as general counsel of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA).
A leader among his peers, Mr. Huie was elected as the 13th president of the State Bar of Georgia (1975-76) and also served as president of the National Conference of Bar Presidents, the Atlanta Bar Association and the Old Warhorse Lawyers Club and was a member of the American Bar Association House of Delegates and the Georgia Judicial Nominating Commission.
Mr. Huie earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Emory University, where he served as president of the Student Body, the Glee Club, the Alumni Association and Board of Visitors. On the occasion of Emory Law School’s 100th anniversary, he was recognized as one of its 100 outstanding graduates. He also served his country in the Army Judge Advocate Corps during the Korean War.
Stell Huie’s exemplary lifetime of service is an inspiration to all Georgia lawyers. We are appreciative of his many contributions to the legal profession and justice system of our state. He will be missed and fondly remembered.
Sincerely,
Ivy N. Cadle
President, State Bar of Georgia
