To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to extend condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of DeKalb County State Court Judge Ronald B. Ramsey Sr. on his untimely passing at the age of 66.

A Georgia Bar member since 1992, Judge Ramsey began his legal career in private law practice and served as director of legal affairs for the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and chief legal officer for the DeKalb County School District. He was appointed in 2000 as the first African American judge for the Stone Mountain Municipal Court and in 2006 was elected to the Georgia State Senate, representing the 43rd District, until his appointment in 2015 as a State Court judge for DeKalb County.

Judge Ramsey pioneered several DeKalb State Court initiatives, including the deferred sentencing program, the court-supervised community service program and the Angel Wings Initiative, providing holiday support for homeless students. He also served the legal profession through his leadership in the Gate City Bar Association, the Judicial Division of the American Bar Association (ABA) and the ABA House of Delegates, to which he was elected in 2023.

Judge Ronald Ramsey will be missed and fondly remembered by his fellow members of Georgia’s legal community. We appreciate his dedication and the many contributions he made through his service to the public and the justice system.

Sincerely,

Christopher P. Twyman
President, State Bar of Georgia
