To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to extend condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of longtime Atlanta attorney and former U.S. Ambassador to Australia Robert D. McCallum Jr. on his passing at the age of 80.

A Georgia Bar member since 1973, Mr. McCallum began his legal career with Alston, Miller & Gaines (later known as Alston & Bird) in Atlanta, where he would spend nearly three decades as a partner. His law practice was focused on appellate advocacy and commercial litigation. He was well known for his courtroom tenacity, intellect and graciousness, as well as mentoring younger lawyers at the firm.

In 2001, Mr. McCallum was appointed by President George W. Bush as assistant attorney general for the Civil Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Two years later, he became associate attorney general and subsequently served as acting deputy attorney general. In 2006, he was appointed as U.S. ambassador to Australia, where he was credited with strengthening the diplomatic, military and economic ties between the two nations.

Robert McCallum will be missed and fondly remembered by his fellow members of Georgia’s legal community. We appreciate his dedication and the many contributions he made through his service to the public and the justice system.

Sincerely,

Christopher P. Twyman
