To the Editor:
On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to offer congratulations and thanks to Presiding Judge M. Yvette Miller of the Court of Appeals of Georgia on her retirement from the bench, which will take effect Dec. 31.
A native of Macon and member of the Georgia Bar since 1981, Judge Miller began her trailblazing career in the legal profession and justice system as an assistant district attorney for Fulton County and, later, as senior in-house counsel for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). She then moved to Jesup, where she worked as general manager and general counsel for her family’s business and practiced law throughout the Brunswick Judicial Circuit.
Transitioning back to Atlanta in 1992, she served as director/judge of the Appellate Division of the State Board of Worker’s Compensation and, four years later was appointed as a Fulton County State Court judge, where she served until her historic appointment by Gov. Roy Barnes in 1999 as the first African-American woman to serve on the Court of Appeals of Georgia. Her 25 years on the court included a term as chief judge, during which time she implemented the e-filing program to improve access to the appellate court for attorneys and parties throughout the state. Among numerous awards she has received over the years are the Tradition of Excellence Award presented by the General Practice & Trial Section of the State Bar of Georgia and the Distinguished Alumnus Award presented by Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law.
We salute Judge Miller on her exemplary career in public service and her many contributions to the betterment of our justice system. We wish her well in all her future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Ivy N. Cadle
President, State Bar of Georgia
