To the Editor:
On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to extend condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of longtime attorney and Georgia Legal Services Program (GLSP) leader John L. Cromartie Jr. of Gainesville on his passing at the age of 83.
A Georgia Bar member since 1966, Mr. Cromartie began his legal career as a clerk to U.S. District Court Judge Sydney O. Smith. He became a partner at Greer, Sartain, Carey & Cromartie and worked with Georgia Mountain Legal Services before becoming executive director of GLSP, where he championed the provision of legal representation to lower-income Georgians. He argued two cases before the U.S. Supreme Court during his time at GLSP.
In 1988, he earned a master’s degree in divinity from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University and entered the ministry, serving as an associate pastor of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church and later as senior pastor of Cumming United Methodist Church. His lifetime commitment to serving the community earned him the 2003 Emory Medal from Emory University, and he was honored as one of 175 Emory History Makers in celebration of the university’s 175th anniversary.
John Cromartie will be missed and fondly remembered by his fellow members of Georgia’s legal community. We appreciate his dedication and the many contributions he made through his service to the public and the justice system.
Sincerely,
Christopher P. Twyman
President, State Bar of Georgia
