To the Editor:
On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to offer congratulations to Justice Nels S.D. Peterson on his recent installation as chief justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia.
Chief Justice Peterson will be well served in his new position by his 19 years of experience in the legal profession and justice system, including the past eight-plus years as a justice on the Supreme Court and his previous service as a judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia. He has also served the public as general counsel for the University System of Georgia, as the state’s first solicitor general in the Attorney General’s Office and as executive counsel to the governor.
Prior to his work in state government, Justice Peterson practiced law with King & Spalding LLP in Atlanta and clerked for Chief Judge William H. Pryor of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He is a graduate of Kennesaw State University and Harvard Law School.
The State Bar of Georgia enjoys a strong working relationship with the Supreme Court of Georgia in our joint mission of serving the public and the justice system, which we look forward to continuing under the leadership of Chief Justice Peterson.
At his investiture, Chief Justice Peterson reminded us that the rule of law plays a foundational role in our society. Of particular importance to our work, he emphasized that lawyers must uphold the highest standards of integrity and honesty, following the rules that govern our profession. Chief Justice Peterson’s words serve as both a reminder and a call to action – to uphold the rule of law, not just in theory, but in practice. In his words, it is “a duty [we] owe not merely to [our] fellow [lawyers]”, but to something greater.
Sincerely,
Ivy N. Cadle
President, State Bar of Georgia
