Fraudulent Emails to Bar Members
- Verify the sender. Check the sender's email address carefully. Phishing emails often use addresses that look similar to legitimate ones but have slight variations. Legitimate emails from the State Bar will come from a recognized domain @gabar.org. However, it is also important to know that email addresses can be spoofed, so scam emails can sometimes appear to come from a legitimate source.
- Question requests for confidential information. Be cautious of unexpected requests for confidential information or documents, especially when they create urgency.
- Hover over links. Before clicking on any links in emails, hover your mouse over them to see the actual URL they lead to. Be wary of URLs that do not match the purported destination.
- Look for grammatical errors and generic greetings. Phishing emails often contain grammatical errors or use generic greetings instead of addressing you by name.
- Report suspicious emails. If you receive a phishing email, report it to your IT staff immediately for further investigation.
