Closing A Law Practice

Closing a Law Practice

Taking steps to create a succession plan is an essential step in ensuring that clients’ interests are protected when lawyers are unable to continue practicing law. It could be voluntary life events such as a job transition or retirement; or involuntary situations like a lawyer’s illness, disability or untimely death. Under any circumstances, clients’ interests must be protected, as well as those of the lawyer. As a courtesy of the State Bar of Georgia, the Law Practice Management Program (LPM) has provided closing law office guides which outline the steps a lawyer must take to protect his or her clients in the event of a sudden inability to continue in practice. These guides* can also help attorneys establish an advance exit plan to invoke in the event of disability, retirement or death.

Voluntary Closing

Are you closing an office due to retirement, a job transition, personal leave or selling a practice? Visit this page for more information and resources to assist you with the process.

Involuntary Closing

Are you closing an office due to attorney absence (caused by an attorney’s death, disability or practice abandonment), suspension from practice or disbarment? Visit this page for information and resources that speak to the specific nature of an involuntary closing.

*Because every law practice is different, you may have questions not covered in the guides. Please call the staff of the LPM Program at 404-527-8772 for additional information on any other subjects of concern or email lpmdept@gabar.org.
