Please join us virtually on January 28, 2026, from 12 – 1 p.m. to learn how the United Nations, through its Mediation Support Unit of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs plays a central role in the UN’s efforts to prevent and resolve conflict around the world.

Our speaker will be Eiko Ikegaya, Chief of the Mediation Support Unit in the Policy and Mediation Division of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs. She has over 25 years of experience working for the United Nations. Eiko previously served as the Deputy Chief of the Policy and Best Practices Service in Department of Peace Operations. She has also been Team Leader for the Policy Planning Unit of PMD and has served in the United Nations Support Mission in Libya. Eiko started up knowledge management teams in the Department of Political Affairs (DPA) and in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations. She also served for many years as desk officer in several DPA regional divisions including Europe and Asia and the Pacific. Eiko has also worked for the National Bureau of Asian Research in Seattle, Washington.

The session will provide an overview of the Mediation Support Unit’s work and will touch upon UN mediation mandates, while discussing the fundamentals of effective peace mediation as outlined in the UN Guidance on Effective Mediation. The session will briefly describe the multi-track approach of peace mediation as well as some process design considerations. It will highlight the rationale for mediation support and walk through the major areas of the work of MSU, including its Standby Team of Senior Mediation Advisors.

The cost will be $10 and 1 hour of general CLE credit will be given (pending approval).

Registration will close 1/27 at 11 a.m. The Zoom link will be emailed 1/27 by 12 noon.
