Elder Law Section | Serving Those Who Served: Veterans Issues Every Elder Law Attorney Should Spot | Virtual CLE

Date: November 9, 2026, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

In honor of Veterans Day, the Elder Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia invites section members to join us for a special virtual CLE focused on helping veterans and their families navigate the aging journey.

Serving Those Who Served: Veterans Issues Every Elder Law Attorney Should Spot
November 9th | 12 - 1 p.m.
Virtual via Zoom

As elder law attorneys, many of us regularly work with veterans, surviving spouses and families who have questions about long-term care, benefits, asset protection, incapacity, and end-of-life planning.

Too often, though, the conversation about veterans benefits begins and ends with Aid & Attendance or burial benefits.

This CLE is designed to go further.

We will focus on the practical issues elder law attorneys should recognize when representing veterans and their families, including how to identify planning opportunities, ask better intake questions and understand when military service may open the door to additional benefits or resources.

Topics will include:

  • Aid & Attendance and other VA pension benefits
  • Burial and survivor benefits
  • Long-term-care planning considerations for veterans and their spouses
  • The intersection of VA benefits, Medicaid planning, estate planning, and asset protection
  • Incapacity and aging-related planning issues unique to veterans
  • How to identify benefits and resources that may otherwise be overlooked
  • Common misconceptions and internet folklore surrounding veterans benefits, including the belief that long-term care is automatically “free” for veterans with a simple phone call
  • When to handle an issue directly and when to refer a client for more specialized VA assistance

The goal is not to make every section member a VA-accredited benefits specialist. It is to help all of us become better issue spotters and better counselors for the veterans and families who already come through our doors.

Those who served our country deserve attorneys who understand how military service can affect the broader elder law planning picture.

Please join your fellow Elder Law Section members for this one-hour CLE program.
