Kevin R. Hurt | Griffin Circuit, Post 1
Candidate Statement
I am seeking election to the Board of Governors because the attorneys of the Griffin Judicial Circuit deserve an independent representative who understands the practical realities of a local practice. Having served as a solo practitioner in Zebulon since 2011 and as a resident of Griffin, I have witnessed firsthand how rising costs and overall well-being matters are squeezing solo and small firm attorneys of our Bar.
My platform focuses on high-impact reforms for local practitioners. First, the sustainability of a solo practice should not be dictated by the volatility of the individual health insurance market. I will advocate for the State Bar to transition toward a true Association Health Plan (AHP), leveraging our collective membership to secure the “large-group” buying power and premium stability currently reserved for large firms.
Second, meaningful wellness starts with structural support. An AHP allows the Bar to negotiate superior mental health parity and specialized coverage directly into our benefits, combating professional burnout at its root.
Finally, we must proactively defend the independence of our courts and the stability of the law. I ask for your vote to bring transparency, accountability and a focus on the local practitioner back to the Board of Governors.

Main Issues Facing the State Bar/Position
- Health Care Advocacy: Pushing for true group health options for Bar members rather than a mere exchange.
- A Structural Foundation for Lawyer Well-being: Moving members into a large-group Association Health Plan (AHP) to ensure mental health and substance abuse benefits are covered at the same level as medical care, preventing higher co-pays or restrictive visit limits.
- Safeguarding Professional Integrity: The State Bar must be on the frontline of resistance against institutional decay to protect the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law.
