State Bar of Georgia Unauthorized Network Access Updates

Friday, June 10, 2022

The week of May 30-June 3 was dedicated to final planning and implementation of the State Bar’s Annual Meeting, which took place June 2-5. Based upon the overwhelming feedback we have received, we are pleased that the event has been described as a success. If you were unable to join us this year, we hope to see you and your guests June 8-11, 2023, in Savannah.

The week of June 6-10 was dedicated to restoring the Members Only Portal to the website, and the addition of a button allowing users to print a copy of their License Fee Notice. The Members Only Portal allows for online payment of license fees, ordering letters of good standing and Bar cards, updating contact information and personal preferences, and logging into Fastcase, etc. We have updated the Frequently Asked Questions to incorporate these changes. We appreciate your patience as we work to rebuild a safe and secure network environment to assist our members and the public.

The week of May 23-27 was dedicated to additional rebuilding, testing and restoring network access to Bar staff so that we are better able to assist members. The Bar’s IT staff and external partners are working closely with technicians to reinstate the membership database which, in turn, will allow the member login on the Bar’s website to return. Our plans call for additional information related to member login and member access to be shared next week. This will include a request to change or update login and password information. We know this can be a tedious process, but we appreciate your patience and understanding that this will be in an effort to ensure no lingering, unauthorized access to the network remains, and is a part of our ongoing effort to rebuild a safe and secure network environment. Thank you for your help with that part of the process.

On a separate note, our Annual Meeting is taking place June 2-5. We are excited about the number of members that have registered and plan to attend. We look forward to seeing all of you there and taking a moment to be away from this work, and focus on the other work of the Bar. The Board Book for the meeting can be found here. It also provides a detailed update on the “unauthorized access” event as prepared by our executive director for the Executive Committee. Additional updates may be presented to the Board of Governors as part of the meeting, and posted on the website. Never hesitate to contact us with any questions.

The State Bar of Georgia has a new temporary website. While not as robust as its formal predecessor, this new temporary site offers more functionality than the static page that was previously online. Next week, we anticipate restoring member login functionality which will allow State Bar members to pay Bar license fees, order letters of good standing, order Bar cards, update contact information and personal preferences, and log in to Fastcase, etc. Bar staff now have their re-imaged devices offering improved security. If you sent Bar staff an email between April 28 and May 11, we were not able to receive it. Email is up and flowing now. Please resend your correspondence so that we may assist you. Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through the unauthorized access of our network.

The week of May 9-13 was dedicated to continuing to contain, eradicate and investigate the unauthorized access. We are continuing to work on providing limited internal access to assist departments with their work, as well as preparing and implementing the re-imaging of staff devices to ensure their safety as we move forward.

This updates our members as we work through the process of repairing and rebuilding under an enhanced security framework and investigating the previously reported incident. We will provide additional updates as information becomes available, but at least every Friday until the network and website are restored. Never hesitate to contact us (through a specific department) for information. Updated information has been added to a list of Frequently Asked Questions to assist you going forward.

Week of May 1 - May 6, 2022

The week of May 1-6 was devoted to containment, eradication and investigation, including efforts to determine the extent of any unauthorized access to member information. We have also continued to work to protect against further ongoing unauthorized access and plan for rebuilding systems. This process can be long and inconvenient, but we are determined to move in a manner that is smart and safe. We are fortunate, however, that when we do move forward with certain functionality, we will be able to move faster at that point, as our backup data and network databases are in good order.

The State Bar of Georgia recently learned of unauthorized access to its network. Upon learning of the unauthorized access, we immediately took steps to secure the network, a cybersecurity firm was engaged and a thorough investigation is being conducted. An endpoint detection and response system is being deployed throughout our network, which includes real-time continuous monitoring, analysis and response capabilities. We are still investigating the incident and have not determined what information, if any, the unauthorized actor may have accessed. Updates will be posted here as additional information is available.
