Atlanta – Sarah B. “Sally” Akins of Miles Mediation & Arbitration and of counsel with Ellis Painter in Savannah was installed June 4 as the 60th president of the 52,000-member State Bar of Georgia during the organization’s Annual Meeting at Amelia Island, Florida.

Akins has previously served as secretary, treasurer and, for the past year, as president-elect of the State Bar and as a member of its Executive Committee.

After nearly 30 years of handling civil jury trials, Akins has been a full-time mediator for the past four years throughout Georgia. She has mediated almost every kind of civil case.

She is a past president of the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association, the Southeast Georgia Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates and the Savannah chapter of the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers and is a past chair of the Board of Bar Examiners. She earned her law degree from the Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law and was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1990.

Akins’ plans for the year ahead include a renewed commitment to professionalism among members of the State Bar, increased emphasis on the benefits available to Georgia lawyers through Bar membership, increased awareness of the Bar’s programs that protect the public interest and an enhancement of the continuing legal education programming for Bar members.

She is married to Dale Akins, a plaintiff’s lawyer and member of the Georgia and South Carolina bars who practices at Akins Law Firm in Bluffton, South Carolina.
