Daily Report

To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I wish to extend congratulations to the recipients of the Pro Bono Service Awards, presented recently by the Legal Services Corporation (LSC). Recognized for "their extraordinary commitment to equal justice" were:

  • Alston & Bird LLP of Atlanta and the United Parcel Services Inc. (UPS) Legal Department, also of Atlanta
  • Randall L. Hughes of Bryan Cave LLP in Atlanta
  • Ann Seward Myers of the Law Offices of Anne Seward Myers in Peachtree City
  • Jeffrey J. Nix of Taylor English Duma LLP in Atlanta
  • Huey W. Spearman of the Spearman Law Firm in Waycross
  • Juli A. Wilkes Wisotsky of Wisotsky Law Inc. in Jefferson

Pro bono service is an essential function of the legal profession to ensure that everyone has access to our justice system regardless of their ability to afford a lawyer. The State Bar of Georgia encourages lawyers to provide at least 50 hours of pro bono service each year and to contribute financially to legal aid and pro bono programs.

I was honored to participate in the awards ceremony, along with former Georgia Gov. Roy E. Barnes, LSC Board Chair John G. Levi and LSC President James J. Sandman. The members of the State Bar are inspired by the dedicated service of our colleagues who received these prestigious awards, and we appreciate their significant contributions to the legal profession and the justice system in our state.

Patrick T. O'Connor

President, State Bar of Georgia
