To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to offer condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of longtime Decatur attorney Marvin T. “M.T.” Simmons Jr. on his recent passing.

During his distinguished career of almost six decades in the legal profession, Mr. Simmons earned a well-deserved reputation as a skilled practitioner of family law and as a mentor to numerous younger attorneys. He was recognized as Atlanta Lawyer of the Year for Family Law and in 1982-83 served as chair of the State Bar of Georgia’s fledgling Family Law Section, which honored him with its Jack P. Turner Award in 1994 and its Joseph P. Tuggle Award for Professionalism in 1998.

A leader among his peers, Mr. Simmons also served his profession as a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar for 30 years, as president of the Decatur-DeKalb Bar Association and as chair of the State Bar Disciplinary Board, Lawyers Assistance Program and Georgia Board of Bar Examiners.

M.T. Simmons will be missed and fondly remembered by his fellow members of the legal community. We appreciate the many contributions he made during his admirable career as a Georgia lawyer through his devoted service to the public and the justice system.
