To the Editor:
On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to extend condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of longtime Atlanta attorney Charles M. Shaffer Jr. after his passing on March 18.
A member of the Georgia Bar since 1968, Mr. Shaffer practiced law for 35 years at King & Spalding in Atlanta, where he was a partner and chaired the firm’s litigation department and hiring committee. He was also a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a past president of the Atlanta Bar Association.
Mr. Shaffer served the greater community in numerous capacities, as a member of the “Atlanta Nine” who brought the 1996 Summer Olympic Games to Atlanta and as president of the Atlanta Sports Council, leading a successful bid to attract the 2000 Super Bowl and, later, the 2007 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. He also chaired Leadership Atlanta and The Marcus Institute, a center for children with developmental disabilities.
Charlie Shaffer will be missed and fondly remembered by his fellow members of the legal community. We appreciate his dedication and the many contributions he made during his career through his exemplary service to the public and justice system.
