To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to express condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of Elberton native and longtime Atlanta attorney Peyton S. Hawes Jr. on his recent passing.

During his distinguished career that began with his admission to the State Bar of Georgia in 1964, Mr. Hawes served in the Georgia Attorney General’s Office early in his career. He entered private practice with the firm of Jones, Bird & Howell before co-founding the firm of Cofer, Beauchamp & Hawes in 1970.

Mr. Hawes further served the public as a member of the Georgia General Assembly and chaired the Fulton County Delegation. He also served as chairman of the Democratic Party of Georgia and later as the 5th Congressional District representative on the Georgia Department of Transportation Board.

Peyton Hawes Jr.’s exemplary lifetime of service is an inspiration to all Georgia lawyers. We are appreciative of his many contributions to the cause of justice in our state and nation.
