To the Editor:
On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to extend congratulations to Atlanta attorney Stacey Y. Abrams on being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Ms. Abrams, who is the former minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives, is well deserving of the award because of her extraordinary work in promoting nonviolent change through voting as head of the Fair Fight Action advocacy group. A graduate of Yale University Law School and member of the State Bar since 1999, she began her legal career as a tax attorney at the Atlanta firm of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, later co-founded the NOW Corp. financial services firm and the Nourish Inc. infant and toddler beverage company, and currently serves as the CEO of the Sage Works legal consulting firm.
She was appropriately praised by Norwegian Parliament member Lars Haltbrekken, who noted while announcing the nomination that Ms. Abrams’ work “follows in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps in the fight for equality before the law and for civil rights.”
The consideration of our distinguished colleague for perhaps the world’s most prestigious annual award is a source of pride for the entire Georgia legal community. We extend our applause and well wishes to Stacey Abrams.
