John "Jack" B. Lyle

Candidate's Campaign Message

It has been my pleasure to serve as president of the Family Law Section this year, and in 2007-08 as president of the Sole Practitioner/Small Firm Section, and treasurer of those sections for a number of other years. Our local bar association is one of the most active and helpful in the state. I am excited about the opportunity to run for the Post 6 on the State Bar Board of Governors.

I have practiced law here in Cobb County for the past 25 years, after four years in Atlanta. I moved to Marietta in 1985, and moved my law practice here in 1988. I have tried or handled hundreds of family law cases, business disputes, and other cases. I have been with small firms or informal lawyer groups this whole time, and I am very familiar with the challenges of running a law office.

I am increasingly aware of the sometimes conflicting demands of meeting our professional standards while running a business for a living. If elected to the Board, I would emphasize looking for ways that the State Bar can serve the members with guidance or assistance in structuring firms and work flow, and managing clients and billing as well as case deadlines. I also believe that we would all benefit from more attention to the demands and the promises of lawyer internet marketing, and the clients’ internet-based knowledge base.

Finally, I completely support continuing the Bar’s efforts to improve public perceptions of the profession, with facts and examples of our good works and the sacrifices that we sometimes make for clients.

I very much appreciate your considering me to help represent you and serve the Bar.

Main issues facing the State Bar/position:

  • Economics of mid-level law practice, including effects of public access to form to information on internet and other client expectations - can the Bar offer more guidance to mid-level and small firms?
  • Public perception - the Bar can help us work to improve that - specific examples of pro bono work done for people
