To the Editor:
The State Bar of Georgia extends condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of Leonard O. “Pete” Fletcher, co-founder and senior partner of Fletcher Harley & Fletcher LLP in Augusta, on his passing at the age of 77.
A member of the Georgia Bar since 1969, Mr. Fletcher served as the longtime attorney for the Richmond County and Columbia County school districts. In that capacity, he helped steer the Augusta area’s schools through integration and continued to speak out on racial inequities throughout his career.
A leader among his peers, Mr. Fletcher served as president of the Augusta Bar Association and the Georgia School Boards Association Executive Council of school board attorneys. He also served his community as an adjunct professor at Augusta University and president of the Augusta Junior Rowing Association and the Augusta Rowing Club.
Pete Fletcher’s exemplary career of service is an inspiration to all Georgia lawyers. We appreciate and will remember his many contributions to the justice system in our state.
Sincerely,
Sarah B. “Sally” Akins
President, State Bar of Georgia
