Daily Report

To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to express condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of longtime Atlanta attorney John T. Marshall after his passing on July 22 at the age of 86.

A member of the Georgia Bar since 1962, Mr. Marshall began his career with the law firm of Powell, Goldstein, Frazer and Murphy, became a partner in 1967 and remained with the firm, which later merged with Bryan Cave, for 47 years. He served the legal profession and justice system in numerous capacities, including president of the Atlanta Bar Association, chair of the State Bar of Georgia’s Standards of the Profession Committee.

Under Mr. Marshall’s leadership, the committee created the first yearlong, supervised mentoring program for beginning lawyers in the United States. The program was honored in 2010 with the American Bar Association’s Gambrell Professionalism Award for Outstanding Achievement, and the State Bar established the John T. Marshall Model Mentor award, honoring Mr. Marshall as its first recipient. He also earned the ABA’s Harrison Tweed Special Merit Award, the Anti-Defamation League’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the State Bar’s Distinguished Service Award and Tradition of Excellence Award, among many others.

John T. Marshall’s exemplary lifetime of service is an inspiration to all members of the legal profession. We are appreciative of his many generous contributions to the cause of justice in our state. He will be missed and fondly remembered.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth L. Fite
President, State Bar of Georgia
