The National Mock Trial Planning Board, at its meeting held in conjunction with the 2006 Championship in Oklahoma City selected Georgia to host the 2009 National High School Mock Trial Championship. The 2009 competition will be held at the Fulton County Courthouse in Atlanta May 6-10, 2009.  High school students from over 44 states, U.S. territories, and South Korea participate in this two-day national competition. This is the second time Georgia has been selected to host nationals, the first time occurring in 1993. Speaking for the National Board, John Wheeler, its Chairperson, stated, "We are confident that the 2009 Atlanta National Championship will be among the best ever! Given the personnel committed to this project, the level of support that mock trial in Georgia receives on a yearly basis, and a proven record of success, the 2009 Championship will be a huge hit!"

The competition weekend involves four preliminary rounds, which are held on Friday and Saturday, with the championship round held Saturday afternoon. Each year over 450 students participate in this event along with Georgia's National Competition Planning Board, chaired by Roy E. Manoll III (Athens), coordinates all the different activities that go into developing a successful national competition including the writing the case, organizing the events, and raising the funds. Jennifer Mann (Decatur) and Christy Barker (Savannah) act as co-chairs and Justice George Carley of the Georgia Supreme Court acts as special consultant. It is estimated that we will need approximately $400,000 to support this four-day event. We are currently accepting tax-deductible donations through the State Bar of Georgia Foundation to support the 2009 national tournament. For donation information, contact Stacy Rieke at the Georgia High School Mock Trial Office (404-527-8779 or stacyr@gabar.org).
