For the Week Beginning December 31, 2007
www.irs.gov -- There will be delay for some taxpayers to file your income tax return for the upcoming tax season due to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). It's purpose was to target a small number of high-income taxpayers who could claim so many deductions that owed little or no income tax. Because of the recent legislation changes, the IRS is currently updating their system and may not be able to process forms for those affected until Feb. 11, 2008.

Returns that include the following forms cannot be filed until Feb. 11, 2008:
-Form 8863, Education Credits
-Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits
-Schedule 2, Form 1040A, Child and Dependent Care Expenses for Form ---1040A Filer
-Form 8396, Mortgage Interest Credit
-Form 8859, District of Columbia First-Time Homebuyer Credit

For additional information and updates about the AMT Tax Reform Act please go to www.irs.gov.

www.googleguide.com -- There are other search engine options besides Google, but Google still dominates the search engine landscape. Most lawyers are proficient at using search engines because the techniques are not that different from digital legal research. But power searching is one area where the poor need to improve and the good can always get better. GoogleGuide lets you start your path to improvement by selecting whether you are a novice, an expert or a teen. The lessons are simple and clear. The real attention getter on this site is GoogleGuide's pair of 2 page quick reference guides, suitable for two-sided printing and maybe even laminating. Even Google "experts" out there will appreciate the Google Calculator Cheat Sheet.

2007 Holiday Gift Guide for Lawyers
Our friend, Reid, has composed his 3rd Holiday Gift Guide for Lawyers, expanding his noteworthy recommendations for you (or other lawyers in your life). There is not a tie, gavel or kitschy brass scale on this list--just gifts that any lawyer would love to have--if they had the time to find it themselves and tell you about it!

A word about Reid Trautz. Reid is an active member of the ABA Law Practice Management Section, currently serving as the chair of the LPM Publishing Board. He's also a member of the ABA General Practice Solo and Small Firm Section Technology Board and a past liaison to the ABA Joint Committee on Lawyer Regulation. He is admitted to the Bars of Minnesota, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Check out his blog! http://reidtrautz.typepad.com/reidmyblog/2007/11/index.html

For the Week Beginning November 21, 2007
www.traffic-simulation.de/ -- When dealing with traffic accident cases, there can be an occasional question about highway design and traffic load and flow. You have to consider whether the traffic may have been a contributing factor in the accident. Now there is a tool that may serve as a model for your underlying assumptions. You have the ability to adjust several variables to see what impact they have on traffic flow. The text is in English, but measurements are in kilometers (to convert, just multiply 1 mile by 1.609 kilometers). This is clearly a starting point, not an end point, in winning your case.

How Stuff Works
www.howstuffworks.com -- Maybe you've wondered how light sticks work. Maybe you've wondered how credit scores work. Or maybe you've wondered how vampires work... then again, maybe not. But if you did wonder, this would be the place on the Web to look. Despite some of the wacky topics, the site is actually very organized. There are nine separate topic areas, or "channels," with everything from "ComputerStuff" to "TravelStuff." Under each channel, there are subchannels -- allowing you to dig even deeper for topics. There's also a search engine, which helped me find "How DVRs Work."

How Stuff Works is not just a website, it's also a series of books, CDs and print newsletters. Careful which links you click; many are really ads in disguise. I learned at least one thing from this site, and that is that I'm not as curious about how things work as I thought I was. But I may actually use this site the next time I think "How DO they do that?"

You Can Have Your Own "Stealth E-Mail"
www.contactify.com/ - We all agree that spam is a real problem. You probably get enough of it to realize that it is completely out of control. There is no sure way to cut down on spam. However, we can certainly take precautions.
For example, you shouldn't post your e-mail address online. A better solution is to use a contact form. Of course, this is difficult if you don't have a Web site.
Contactify has a solution for you. It will create an e-mail form for you. Just give out the Web address. The messages will be delivered to your inbox. And spammers won't have the time to use it!

www.KensingtonPowerAdapter.com - You may not realize this, but there's a better-than-average chance that most of your gadgets' power supplies can step down (or up) the voltage that comes down a foreign wire. (Check your AC adapter; you'll find a range of voltages supported, usually from around 80 volts to 220.) That means you don't need an expensive, heavy power converter, but just a way to plug your standard American two- or three-prong plug into voltage in foreign lands. This model from Kensington looks capable and the product cost is only $15 (or less - depending on the vendor).

Interested in Converting Your Voicemails into Text (for FREE)?
www.simulscribe.com -- Although we can't fault the companies in the cell phone industry for wanting to increase their bottom line, those companies are constantly finding ways to use more and more of your minutes: costing you more and more money. For example, the voicemail prompts you hear these days are longer than they've ever been. Even when you check your own messages, the prompts are slow and long. But, creative people are always coming up with ways to work around the system. A couple of companies have come up with a way for you to have your voice mail message translated to text messages. Simulscribe.com, is offering a one-week, free test-drive. But look for a free program coming - you simply send an e-mail message to gamma@apinvox.com. When it is ready to go in this country, you'll get it free for one year. Watch out, though, and be sure to check if your cell phone provider will charge a punitive fee to have your voicemail rerouted. Keep an eye out for these services.
