Hilton Head Island, S.C. – Laverne Lewis Gaskins, attorney for Valdosta State University, was appointed by State Bar of Georgia President-Elect Patrise Perkins-Hooker to serve on the 45,000-member organization’s Board of Governors and was installed June 22 during its Annual Meeting.
Gaskins will serve in an at-large seat on the board. She earned her law degree from Florida State University Law School and currently serves on its Alumni Board of Directors. She was admitted to the State Bar of Georgia in 1993.
She previously served on the Board of Governors and is a former Georgia special assistant attorney general. Gaskins is a current member of the Editorial Board of The Journal of College and University Law, a former associate editor of the National Bar Association Magazine, and a current member of the Board of Advisors of the Campus Legal Advisor.
The Board of Governors is the 160-member policymaking authority of the State Bar, with representation from each of Georgia’s judicial circuits. The board holds regular meetings at least four times per year.
The State Bar of Georgia, with offices in Atlanta, Savannah and Tifton, was established in 1964 by Georgia’s Supreme Court as the successor to the voluntary Georgia Bar Association, founded in 1884. All lawyers licensed to practice in Georgia belong to the State Bar. Its more than 45,000 members work together to strengthen the constitutional promise of justice for all, promote principles of duty and public service among Georgia’s lawyers, and administer a strict code of legal ethics.
